Bobby Hughes

Bobby Hughes

Bobby Hughes was born in Vancouver and went to school with the famous local broadcaster Jack Cullen. While Cullen went into radio, Bobby began singing at various weddings, anniversaries and celebrations about town. He was likened, at that time, to a combination of Bing Crosby and Perry Como. His singing talent finally attracted the attention of the CBC Radio heirarchy and he was hired as the male singer on the Nabob-sponsored Harmony House Show that took place on Tuesday evenings on stage at the Orpheum Theatre. Maestro Ricky Hyslop was Harmony House’s director and band leader. Bobby also performed on other live CBC variety music programs singing the popular hits of the day. At the same time, he was Jack Cullen’s unofficial researcher for names, dates and bios for Jack’s nightly Owl Prowl program on CKNW. It was a fun, totally off-the-wall program with scheduled interviews with visiting celebrities and drop-in guests with Bobby doing the introductions and watching the clock. Being a husband and father, though, meant that he had to have a real job so he finally became a bus driver. Even as a career bus driver, Bobby sang to his passengers as he wheeled them safely home. He passed away several years ago
