Otto Lowy
Otto Lowy’s name became synonymous with “The Transcontinental,” the long-running radio show he wrote and hosted on CBC. He also performed on stage as writer, host, narrator with symphony orchestras across Canada. His popular series with the VSO was called “Tea and Trumpets.” Born in Prague, Otto escaped to Britain by joining the RAF in 1939. Having lost all his family in the Holocaust, he emigrated to Vancouver in 1948 and began a long career in the Arts as an actor on stage, radio, feature films and t.v.; a theatre director; a translator of dramas from Czech and German; a writer of radio and tv plays and prize-winning documentaries; and a radio and tv host. He was honoured with the Austrian Gold Cross of Merit for Science and Art, First Class, and the Great Cross for Service from the province of Lower Austria.
