Saying Goodbye to Jazman Kenny Colman
Vancouver jazz singer Kenny Colman recently passed away at the age of 85. Praised by entertainment legends such as Leonard Feather, David Foster, Johnny Mandel and Frank Sinatra, Kenny’s recordings include the critically acclaimed Dreamscape featuring harmonica legend Toots Thielmans, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the compositions and arrangements of the great Johnny Mandel.
Raised in Winnipeg, Kenny segued from a career as a professional athlete to radio DJ and then to life as a jazz singer. He eventually became a regular fixture on the international club circuit with notable engagements in Monte Carlo, Las Vegas and New York. His singing career spanned 50 years.
Colman was a ‘real deal’ singer, a professional entertainer who knew the value of a great song and how to ‘sell it’ to the audience. His signature husky sound made him instantly recognizable on radio, and he was a consummate live entertainer. He will be missed by his friends and fans, but his music lives on.
